Counselling – What You Need to Know

Counselling is a type of talk therapy that helps you manage and change your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. You can find help with a range of problems such as relationship difficulties, work stress, eating disorders or low self-esteem.

A counsellor is a professional who is trained to listen sympathetically and guide you through the process of working through your issues, so that you can gain a more positive perspective of yourself, your situation and the reasons behind your actions. They will also support you to identify the primary cause of your problem and develop a plan of action that will enable you to overcome it.

This can be done on a one-to-one basis with your therapist or you may choose to attend group counselling sessions where you can meet others who are experiencing similar issues. This can be a very useful method of gaining a supportive network and also provides a unique opportunity to learn new coping strategies in a safe environment.

You will need to bring a form of identification with you, so that your counsellor can verify your identity. You can use a driver’s license or passport and if you are using health insurance to pay for your psychotherapy, please bring the appropriate card along as well. You may also wish to bring a notepad and pen, in case you need to take notes during the session. It is also a good idea to have a snack and drink with you, as this will help keep your attention and focus throughout the session.
